Sheets Buying Guide
Here's everything you need to know about the fibers, construction and quality details that make a difference in our sheets so you can choose what's best for you:
ORGANIC COTTON
Certified Organic Cotton
Our 100% cotton sheets are made from certified organic cotton. Grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides or synthetic fertilizers, our cotton sheets are certified to the gold standard for organic cotton. Plus, the cotton is farmed in an environmentally responsible way that uses less water and is better for the soil.
High-Quality Yarn
All of our cotton sheets are woven from single-ply yarns. Single-ply yarns result in threads that are far finer and stronger than multi-ply, creating softer, longer-lasting sheeting material.
Meaningful Thread Count
When it comes to thread count, higher isn't always better. Thread count is defined as the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. When that fabric is woven using single-ply yarns, as our cotton sheets are, a higher thread count means a softer fabric.
Our cotton sheets are available in two thread counts:
- 200 thread count is a lighter-weight weave that provides softness and durability at a good value.
- 400 thread count is a tighter weave made of finer threads, making it extra-soft and long-lasting.
When multi-ply yarns are used, as with cheaper knockoffs, it can result in a higher thread count (think 600, 800) but it's usually a coarser and ultimately lower quality sheet.
Classic Weaves
Our cotton sheets come in two classic weaves, each with its own unique texture: percale and sateen.
Percale: The one-over, one-under weave of percale produces a strong fabric with a matte, crisp finish. Its lighter-weight weave is more breathable than sateen and less likely to pill. Percale is ideal for warmer months or sleepers who prefer staying on the cooler side.
Sateen: The alternating one-yarn-under, four-yarns-over weave of sateen produces a smooth, lustrous finish and silky hand. Sateen's tighter weave gives it a warmer, lusher feel than percale. Sateen is ideal for cooler months or sleepers who prefer staying on the cozier side.
Finishing Touches
We go the extra mile to ensure that our sheets are soft and smooth. For our Organic Washed Cotton Sheets. For our Organic Cotton Percale, we comb the cotton, removing any short fibers to maximize durability and further enhance its anti-pilling characteristics.
LINEN
Quality Linen
Linen is an all-natural fiber woven from the flax plant. The flax for our linen sheets is grown in Europe, which is known for producing the finest flax due to its temperate climate and soil, and is cultivated in an environmentally sustainable way.
Versatility + Durability
Linen is very breathable, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, making it ideal for hot summer nights, but also a good insulator in winter (and a great choice for couples who sleep warm and cold). Linen fibers are more durable than cotton and have natural antibacterial properties.
Why No Thread Count?
Linen yarns are slightly thicker and more textured than cotton, so while linen sheets use the same plain over-under weave as cotton percale, they are not typically measured by thread count.
Soft Colors, Soft Feel
Both our Melange and Fiber-Dyed Linen Sheets are woven from linen threads in slightly varied hues, resulting in natural, softly variegated hues that are especially colorfast. All of our linen sheets are pre-washed so that they feel soft from the start, unlike most linen sheets, which can take many washes to soften.
No Iron Necessary
The natural wrinkling properties of linen give it a softly rumpled look that exudes effortless style, no ironing necessary. If you don't like the rumpled look, then linen sheets probably aren't for you (unless you like to iron). To help preserve fibers and reduce wrinkling, take linen sheets out of the dryer when not quite dry, then make the bed or smooth and fold.
TENCEL®
A Modern "Miracle Fiber"
TENCEL® is made by a process that turns eucalyptus wood chips into fine, single-ply yarns, which we use to make 320 thread count sheets that are silky soft and highly absorbent. TENCEL® wicks away moisture better than cotton or linen and is softer than silk. It's also wrinkle-, shrink- and static-resistant.
Low Environmental Impact
The eucalyptus fiber used to make TENCEL® comes from FSC®-certified, sustainably forested trees grown without artificial irrigation or chemical fertilizers. 99% of the organic, non-toxic solvent used is recovered and reused, with close to zero emissions. Water consumption in the production of TENCEL® is 10-20 times less than with cotton.
How TENCEL® Is Made
- Eucalyptus trees are sustainably grown and harvested into wood chips.
- The wood chips are processed into wet wood pulp, or cellulose.
- The dried cellulose is broken up into small wafers, then dissolved in solvent and extruded into fibers.
Fair Trade
Our TENCEL® sheets are made in a Fair Trade certified factory, where we pay premiums that workers have chosen to invest in a health clinic that serves the entire community.
Bold, Lustrous Color
TENCEL® fabric takes dye exceptionally well, producing rich color that lasts wash after wash. It has a subtle sheen that's similar to sateen.
FLANNEL
A Finer Flannel
Ultra-soft and cozy, our premium-quality flannel bedding is made from recycled cotton yarns blended with a small amount of synthetic fibers (such as viscose or polyester) for added strength and a smoother finish than typical flannels. After the flannel is woven, it's brushed for incredible softness and the napped texture that creates flannel's insulating properties.
Flannel is a cozy option for cooler months, but ours is comfortably lightweight enough to use year-round—even better, it gets softer with every wash.
Sustainably Sourced + Healthy for Your Home
Certified to the Global Recycled Standards, our flannel uses recycled cotton yarns spun from textile leftovers that would otherwise go to waste. It's also Oeko-Tex® Certified to be healthy for you + your home: Oeko-Tex® products are tested in a third-party lab and verified to be free from over 300 harmful substances.
QUALITY HERITAGE
Our flannel is woven, cut and sewn by a family-owned company in Guimarães, Portugal, a city known for its textiles heritage. With roots as a small weaving factory, the company has been making the finest quality flannel for 70 years.
