Types and Features of Bedding
There are sheet sets and other bedding essentials to fit most every bed. You'll find modern bedding comes in sizes to fit most all mattresses, including the following:
- Twin
- Twin XL
- Full
- Queen
- King
- California King
They're made from easy care materials that you can launder in your home washing machine, and many pieces can be tumble-dried.
Organic cotton is a popular material for sheets, quilts and other bedding must-haves because it's soft, sturdy and breathable. Supima cotton sheets are even stronger than regular cotton due to this cotton species's long-staple fiber. In addition to its strength and softness, Supima cotton is colorfast for enduring vibrancy. We are committed to reaching and maintaining 100% responsibly sourced cotton. We define responsibly sourced cotton as GOTS-certified, OCS-certified, Better Cotton or recycled cotton. We are a proud member of Better Cotton. Better Cotton is sourced via a system of mass balance and is not physically traceable to end products. Learn more at bettercotton.org/massbalance.
Another high-quality option is linen bedding. You'll find linen sheet sets and duvets that are temperature-regulating for year-round use. Linen helps you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and it has a subtle texture that's ultra-luxe. It's also a machine-washable fabric and gets softer with every laundering.
TENCEL® is a bedding fabric that offers even greater strength than cotton, with moisture-wicking properties. It's easy care and has many of the same features you'd expect from a cotton-linen blend. Plus, it's sustainably sourced from lyocell, a plant-based fiber.
Flannel sheets are a must-have for fall and winter. This cozy brushed fabric is warm and ultra-soft, and it can be matched to other bedding pieces in a similar print or coordinating color. Like the other fabrics mentioned here, flannel is machine-washable so it's easy to care for.
When shopping for bedding, there are a few features to look out for. The gram weight of the fabric is one; the higher the number, the more densely woven the fabric. Thread count is another feature to consider when buying sheet sets or other bedding items for yourself or a gift. Generally, the higher the thread count, the stronger and softer the fabric.
Other Modern Bedding Essentials
West Elm has mattresses made from sustainable, organic materials. There are Leesa mattresses and models from Beautyrest®, along with an array of mattress foundations. The DUX Mattress for West Elm is an exclusive quilted mattress with steel-spring support and OEKO-TEX® certified construction.
Cover your mattress with a mattress topper or pad to protect it against wear and spills. The addition of a mattress pad can also make your mattress softer, depending on the type of pad you choose. Once you've dressed your modern bed with a mattress and topper, layer on the sheet set of your choice and the rest of your bedding.
Coordinating the Look
There are plenty of ways to create a coordinated look with bedding and bedroom furnishings. White bedding is ultra-versatile and goes with any decor, whether your style is boho-inspired, rustic or glam. For example, you could pair all-white bedding with a natural-fiber rug and Capiz chandelier or opt for plaid bedding with a shag rug.
